A New Culture Overview
Here you stand on the verge of making the transition from living at home to venturing out on your own. You are trying to make decisions that will have an effect upon the rest of your life.
For any young adult, these decisions can be overwhelming. You are going to work through all of these decisions in addition to moving from the country you have called home to the country that your parents call home. Check out the blogs we've posted that contain practical advice on how to navigate some of the cultural, social/relational and emotional transitions you will have to make.
- For the studious types, check out Third Culture Kids by David C. Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken. This is more of an academic book as opposed to a “how to” book. However, it is pretty straightforward and easy to read.
- For the more social types, you can talk with MKs you already know who have already returned to the States.
- For the hands-on types, consider attending a re-entry seminar. The following organizations offer 1–2 week Re-Entry/MK Transition Seminars or in some cases, even a virtual seminar. Visit their websites or contact them directly for more information.
