The earthquake of April 16, 2016 had a devastating effect on our city and our church. Thousands of homes and buildings in and around Manta were destroyed or have since been demolished. Tens of thousands of citizens have been homeless, either living in makeshift shelters and refugee centers, or returning to un-safe houses. Our church building suffered serious damage to some second-story walls, though the foundation, structure, and first-floor walls were safe. Thanks to the generosity of several of our partner churches in the USA and many individual donors, we have been able to deliver a lot of material aid and move forward to rebuild!

Church Building

In the first few weeks after the earthquake we received enough money to remove rubble, knock down damaged, unsafe walls, and rebuild them to provide a safe place to meet. Recently we were able to return our attention to that project. Now work is underway to finish the damaged walls and paint the entire auditorium building inside and out. More money will be needed for getting the church building in top condition.

Homes

Because of the compassion and generosity of many givers, we have been able to devote some funds to helping our church family rebuild damaged homes. After assessing the needs of about twenty houses that came to our attention, we set about making estimates for necessary materials, purchasing and delivering steel, bricks, cement, and metal roofing. In some cases workmen were provided as well. Your offerings are helping rebuild 8 homes with major damage and assisting others with lesser needs.

Pastor Darwin Moreira

One of our priorities in rebuilding was to see to the needs of our ministry team. We have been able to respond to and care for those who serve. Pastor Darwin, his wife Jessica, and their children need to relocate. They own a lot where they had previously begun building a home. Through your giving we have been able to assist them in advancing the project. We are still short of making a portion of the house “livable,” but we are praying for God’s provision to make that a reality very soon.

La Revancha Mission

The mission in La Revancha is a new church, planted in February 2016. After the earthquake they changed their meeting place to the home of one of our church members. The mission usually has around 30 attending Sunday services. Now they are also using an adjoining property. The owner of the property has agreed to allow some modifications to the existing building instead of rent payments. He is also interested in selling the property to the church. We’re just $1,500 short of the money needed to finish expanding the space for Sunday School and services. This is a great opportunity!
