Fall is one of the things I miss most about living in the States. The cool weather, all things pumpkin, the scarves and sweaters, the changing colors—need I go on? It is my favorite time of year besides Christmas of course. Fall brings such a feeling of togetherness whether you’re streaming in a football game (IF the WiFi is working) or enjoying Thanksgiving goodies from back home (that someone brought to you). We celebrate Thanksgiving Day in part because of a man named Squanto. Squanto was an Indian who traveled to England and learned to speak English. He served as the Pilgrims’ personal guide and interpreter as they adjusted to a new land. Without him, the Pilgrims would have starved long before the “first Thanksgiving.” Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “ Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Missions can be hard and many times you feel like an outsider much like the Pilgrims did I’m sure. As an MK, I have experienced what it is like to not understand what is spoken or written around you. I have experienced the frustration and sometimes fear that can result. Aren’t you glad that the Lord personally goes ahead of each one of us? God has given each of us a “Squanto”—a person to help us along, explain things, tell you where to go, where to find needed things, and what others around you are saying. Before my family and I moved to Peru, God had gone before us. He had set up a network of people that would be our interpreters, helpers, encouragers, and trusted friends. Whether you’re an MK preparing to move, starting deputation, or returning to the States, the Lord has already been where you are and where you are going. He will never fail you or abandon you. God sends people at just the right time. For that I am truly grateful. Who is your Squanto?
