-by Katelynne Duke, MK to Peru
Have you ever felt like you don’t fit in somewhere you should? That’s how I feel every time I come back to the States. I look like every other American, so why don’t I fit in? I don’t fit in because I’m not one of them, I don’t act like them, I don’t live like them. I’m not defined by my passport, or the location on my birth certificate. If you were to come up to me right now and ask me where I’m from, I would say Peru. Maybe I was born in the United States, maybe I live here now, but I’m a Peruvian.
Growing up I never knew what to tell people in churches when they asked me if I was happy to be home. I would think, “Am I really home? Where is home?” I had the typical missionary kid identity problem. But now that I’ve moved back to the States who I am couldn’t be clearer. I am a MK. I am a child of God. I am a Peruvian. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, or where you live, as long as you remember who you are in Christ, you’ll be ok. Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart, I appointed you as a prophet of nations.”
