(a recent prayer letter from Sam Masters, Argentina)
Like most places, Argentina has been under quarantine since the middle of March. Over the last few weeks, the authorities have allowed areas without focal points of infection to open. Our city is still under strict lock down order, although more and more people seem to ignore the restrictions. Like most other places, people are struggling to balance health concerns with economic need.
Our churches have done much better than we originally expected. In fact, I believe we may emerge strengthened from the pandemic.
In our original church, where I am still one of the pastors, we have seen the people respond with great generosity. When the crisis began, we calculated our benevolence fund had enough to cover the increased needs for about a month. Now, three months later, we have yet to spend a single peso from the original amount. We have seen a spontaneous outpouring of generosity from our members and have more on hand now than at the beginning of the pandemic.
Our small group ministry has also risen to the occasion. Now, everyone knows how to use Zoom. And as much as I hate WhatsApp, it has been a great tool for everyone to stay connected.
We have also, paradoxically, seen increased opportunities for evangelism. Our pastors are recording daily devotionals to send via WhatsApp. Surprisingly, many nonbelievers have wanted to receive them. And they are being put on the radio every day in Cachi.
We are grateful for individuals and churches that partner with the work here through the Crecer Foundation. We received a very generous donation to help with food donations. While our core churches have been able to care for their own, some smaller congregations in needier areas have significant needs. With the funds from the Foundation we are distributing packages of food staples, along with a Bible and evangelistic materials, in several areas including Saldan, Barrio Yapeyu, a poor neighborhood in Cordoba, La Rinconanda, and among Bolivian immigrants on the outskirts of Cordoba.
Thanks for your faith, prayers and support.
