(a recent prayer letter from Botswana)
Sometimes in the middle of what seems like nothingness, God blesses your heart in a surprising way. This week, we were contacted via Facebook by a young man.
He wanted to know if we were the Workman family who were in Western Kenya in 1986 at Elgon View Baptist Church. When we told him YES! we were, he responded that at that time, he was a young boy in Sunday School. Then he asked how everyone was and had remembered the whole family’s names. He wrote that he has grown into a man through the Baptist ministry and its doctrine was firm. He said, “I have the same good books you used to give us.”
We asked him what caused him to think of us and he replied, “I missed you people. When I was young you inspired me a lot how you connected with the people, the congregation and shared their values. I have never seen people like you. As young children in the church we felt loved and connected to God. It was amazing days.” WOW! What amazing things God did. We were new missionaries and were just trying to figure out culture and reaching people. At that church, we started by passing out fliers. Then we found out that most of the people in the village could not read! Years later, we found those fliers posted on the walls in their homes. We were novices at language learning and they suffered through Steve’s Swahili sermons until finally he was proficient.
We know, of course, that it was God’s love they were experiencing for the first time. He was just using us as a conduit so they could know Him. Most of you have supported us since those days. We wanted you to know that the work from way back then had fruit and continues to produce fruit to your account. Faithful people praying and giving, that is the story of you! How blessed we are to have you supporting us!
