Standing on a mountain in Galilee, Christ’s disciples received a life-changing command: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” The same command is extended to every believer today. And whether a Christian goes across the street or across the ocean, when he goes as Christ commanded, he is participating in something greater than himself.
When Jesus first called His disciples, He invited them to leave their nets and become “fishers of men”. Fishing was their livelihood, but Christ made it clear that following Him was a far greater work.
I once offered a woman a Gospel tract, and I was shocked by her response. She scoffed, “Why would you waste your life believing something like that?” I was in college at the time, serving a field internship in Canada, where my family and I are now preparing to serve as missionaries.
Her derision surprised me, but she was only expressing the common rationale of secular society. Missions makes little sense to a world that is all about temporary fulfillment.
As a young family, it doesn’t make much sense for us to uproot our lives and move to Canada. We could stay home and enjoy worldly comforts, continuing to fish for fish. But instead, we get to serve a greater calling.
Fishing for men is greater because it is Christ’s calling. His plan for our family is, of course, greater than our own. Fishing for men is also eternal. It has been said that the only thing you can take with you to Heaven is other people. By carrying out Christ’s command to go and make disciples, we are investing in what has eternal value.
It is never a waste when a believer decides to follow Jesus. On the contrary, following Jesus’ command to go is the greatest calling of all.
