(a recent prayer letter received from Les and Donna Garner, Mexico)
On one Wednesday afternoon each month, a group of about 100 ladies meet at the church for Bible study, prayer and fellowship. The remaining Wednesdays of the month, the ladies meet virtually on the internet for prayer and a Bible study. These ladies have for many years been involved in a special ministry they call in Spanish: “Misericordia” or mercy. They save all their loose change during the week, which is received on Sunday, and is used to assist those in our community who are less fortunate, such as orphanages, shelters, etc. Each year a report is submitted in December and I am always amazed by the offerings that are given and the number of people that have been helped.
The state of Chihuahua has a population of five million people, however, Spanish is not the only language spoken as there are several indigenous tribes in our state, the largest of these being the Tarahumara. One of the major blessings has been the growth of a church in the mountain town of Creel that was started more than 40 years ago by a Mexican missionary, Alfonso Sanchez, to the Tarahumara. The first ten years of hard work were almost barren, as less than ten Tarahumara people were saved and baptized, but, in the last several years, there have been occasions when more than ten people have been baptized in a service down at the river. Bro. Sanchez is not doing well physically. He is at age 70 and is worn out. He has walked twenty, thirty miles or more for years, on mountain trails because there are no roads that are fit for vehicles and he has walked those mountain trails to share the Gospel in remote villages of the Tarahumara. He and his wife Mirna need your prayers.
