For 70 years, the BBFI has approved both men and women as single career missionaries who have served alongside career missionary couples all around the world. Because of their efforts, singles are adding breadth to existing ministries that effectively reach a greater population for the cause of Christ. Some single men go as church planters, while others go to partner with other established career missionaries. Single missionaries work to reach the children, youth, ladies and men through various ministries. They actively train new leaders to continue in these ministries as they focus on evangelism, discipleship and church planting. Just as with any ministry, there is a lot to do, and single missionaries are uniquely enabled with a singular focus.
Singles can be spontaneous, flexible and available to do ministry. By serving alongside a married couple, the local ministry is doubled by their ability to prepare lessons, visit and counsel those in need. Single missionaries can be available as a “first responder” to situations because of their flexibility. During deputation, single ladies often present in children’s ministries, ladies’ groups, regularly scheduled services, VBS and mission conferences. Since ladies can directly minister to women and children, 60-70% of any population can be reached in a more personal way. This means that they can teach, win, disciple, and counsel others with the gospel.
How can you help multiply the ministry of BBFI missionaries? Pastors have the unique opportunity of making phone calls to their fellow pastors to recommend single missionaries. By providing opportunities for single missionaries to present in various capacities in their church on a regular basis, sending pastors can help them gain more experience in sharing their passion. Consider allocating funds for missionaries to attend state fellowship meetings where they can contact other mission-minded pastors. Best of all, make it a priority to take single missionaries on for regular financial support. Whether we send or go, ALL have a part in fulfilling the Great Commission.
