We are off and running in 2021. So far it does not seem much different than last year with all the restrictions, lockdowns, online services and virus cases. In 2020 we had 18 missionaries pass on to glory and three of them were active or not retired. When I think about it, there are grieving families in friends for sure, but they are in heaven and don’t have to experience what our world is facing these days. From COVID-19 restrictions on church gatherings to cancel culture, we should be realistic about what is happening. At the same time, we need to lead our ministries without giving in to a spirit of fear, conspiracy theories, or reliance on political power to achieve our ends. The cultural change is creating opportunities for the gospel. I pray that God opens our eyes to see the many opportunities that are still before us.
Some of our missionaries who have been stuck here in the US have been able to return and I am so thrilled for them. In some countries they are opening things up and yet in some they are still in lockdown. I think we will see things swinging back and forth through this year as we work through this virus and learn more about it. Then, the vaccine. There are many thoughts about this. As I consider what I will do about getting it and when, my mind comes to missionaries who might have to make the decision of getting the vaccine in order to travel to the country God has called them to. These are not easy decisions. I will most likely get the vaccine so that I can travel and visit with missionaries, but I am thinking of waiting as long as I can before doing so. Last year at this time I was not even thinking that we would all be dealing with decisions like this. There are many differing opinions on all this too – even among missionaries.
In a few weeks I will be sharing in great detail about the new initiative the Mission Office is doing to rally the churches of our Fellowship to come together to ask God for more missionaries. Could you use more help in your country of service? I have shared this initiative with our Fellowship leadership, and they are very excited about it and will do their part. Stay tuned and there is a very important part for you in this effort.

I hope you have a fabulous February. You are thought of, appreciated, and prayed for by so many. Most of all you are loved by our Lord and He promises to never leave you nor forsake you – He is always with you. That is a promise to stand on during these crazy times. By the way, things sure seem uncertain these days around the world, but we know that heaven is certain. Until Jesus comes, let’s serve our King!
