Being on the mission field I’ve learned that modesty is looked at differently than in the States. Most of my friends would wear any item of clothing without thinking twice about it. Sometimes its hard for me to be different than the people around me, especially when it comes to clothes. But, as a missionary kid, I know different, and I know that a girl who desires to honor God will dress modestly.
When girls wear inappropriate clothing, they are drawing attention to themselves in order to get praise and glory. They aren’t really focused on God and what He wants. God wants us to focus our attention on Him, and not on outward appearances that will fade away. God created us in His image to bring Himself glory, and our bodies are His temples. What we do with our bodies shows a lot about our character and who we are. We need to be focused on honoring God before anyone else.
A girl who wears clothes to impress is trying to obtain other people’s praise and admiration. She needs others to tell her she’s beautiful and enough. She’s not honoring herself, her character, her reputation, or her body by constantly stooping to other people’s level to fit in. She’s not using her gifts and talents to serve God and be admired for what’s on the inside. A girl who wants to bring glory to God will forget about her own desire for praise and do everything she can to make Him known. People will know her by her fruits, and they will honor and think highly of a girl whose morals and ideals are shown to be right by the way she dresses.
Lastly, dressing modestly honors guys around her. Guys are watching. Girls need to be very careful with dressing trashy around guys, because they can be the reason that some guy falls into sin. It’s very easy to dress for the approval of guys, but it’s wrong.
If a girl wants to honor God, herself, and other guys, she will desire to dress modestly. Honoring God will become her desire as she puts into practice her conviction, and by honoring God, she will honor herself and all the guys who are watching, including her future husband.
